One Whole Foods Move Set Off a Chain Reaction at Los Gatos Blvd and Blossom Hill

October 29, 2026

Weathered cedar-shingle home entry with an oak door, cream porch column and sandstone steps beside a strawberry tree.

Stand at the corner where Los Gatos Boulevard meets Blossom Hill Road and you can see three grocery buildings that will be in very different states over the next year. The new Whole Foods sits on the old Chevrolet dealership land at 15650 Los Gatos Blvd. Nob Hill Foods is right across Los Gatos Almaden Road, with a closing date on the calendar. One block away at Cornerstone Shopping Center, the space Whole Foods left is waiting for a San Francisco grocer that has never had a South Bay store.

The chain started when Whole Foods opened on April 15, 2026. By mid-2027 the corner should be back to two full-size grocers, the same number it had before the move. Whole Foods will be one of them. Nob Hill, after nearly 56 years, will not.

The sequence, by date

Here is the order of the changes, with the dates the companies and local reporters have given.

  1. April 15, 2026. Whole Foods opened its new 43,130-square-foot store at 15650 Los Gatos Blvd. It replaced the company's older Los Gatos store, which had been open for more than 30 years.
  2. August 2026. Nob Hill decided not to renew its lease at Los Gatos Boulevard and Blossom Hill Road. In the same news cycle, Gus's Community Market signed for the 18,000-square-foot former Whole Foods space at Cornerstone.
  3. Early September 2026. Club Studio opened in the 19,000-square-foot former Rite Aid at 15920 Los Gatos Blvd, also at Cornerstone.
  4. November 14, 2026. Club Studio holds its formal grand opening. A Los Gatos Chamber of Commerce ribbon-cutting is planned before it.
  5. Spring 2027. Gus's is expected to open at Cornerstone.
  6. June 2027. Nob Hill Foods in Los Gatos is scheduled to close.

Every grocery change on the list follows from the first step.

Step one: Whole Foods crossed the road

The new Whole Foods is on part of a redevelopment by Sand Hill Property Company. The project covers the former Chevrolet dealership land between roughly 15500 and 15650 Los Gatos Blvd. San José Spotlight described it as more than seven acres, shared by Whole Foods and a Tesla showroom and service center.

Whole Foods says the store is nearly twice the size of the one it replaced. It has a larger parking lot dedicated to its customers, more seating and a coffee and juice bar. The company's opening announcement gave daily hours of 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. The extra floor space goes mostly to food you can eat on the spot:

  • hot food and salad bars
  • pizza by the slice or whole pie
  • a Market Sandwich counter
  • sushi made daily by Genji

Much of the stock is local. The cheese counter carries Andante Dairy and Nicasio Valley Cheese. The produce section sources from Tomatero Farm and Coke Farm. The bakery carries bread from Firebrand Artisan Breads and Acme Bread Company. The beverage section lists more than 500 wines and more than 330 craft beers, with products from more than 110 local wineries and 40 local breweries.

The move put Whole Foods directly across Los Gatos Almaden Road from Nob Hill. Before, it had been a block away inside Cornerstone. The Los Gatan called the face-off "the Battle of Blossom Hill grocers" and reported that it "ended before it had much of a chance to heat up."

Step two: Cornerstone filled both of its empty anchor spaces

The move left Cornerstone with an empty grocery space, and the center's Rite Aid had also left. By the end of summer 2026, both spaces had new tenants. A grocer is going back into the grocery space. The pharmacy space became a gym.

Club Studio is the tenant you can already visit. According to Hoodline, it has four studio rooms offering heated yoga, reformer Pilates, indoor cycling and strength sessions, along with functional training areas and cardio equipment. The November 14 grand opening will include giveaways and local vendors.

The second space is getting a grocer new to the South Bay. Gus's Community Market is a family-owned San Francisco grocer that opened its first store in 1981 and now runs five stores in the city. The Los Gatos store will be its first in the South Bay. The center's property manager, in its August announcement, said an in-house café partner will be part of the store and that more details will come as the spring 2027 opening gets closer.

So Cornerstone will still have a grocer. Gus's will be in the same space where Los Gatos shopped at Whole Foods for decades, but run by a different company.

Step three: Nob Hill's final months

For Nob Hill, the new Whole Foods across the road came first and the decision to leave came second. The Los Gatan reported that Nob Hill confirmed it would leave about four months after Whole Foods opened. A spokesperson for Raley's, which owns Nob Hill, said the company reviewed the store's performance and current economic conditions before choosing not to renew the lease, which expires in 2027.

The Los Gatos store is part of a wider round of closures. The same report notes that Raley's closed its Mountain View store in May and its Roseville store in January. In late August, the Los Angeles Times reported that the Los Gatos store plans to close in June 2027.

That means Nob Hill stays open through this holiday season and the first months of next year. Nobody has publicly said what will go into 15710 Los Gatos Blvd after it leaves.

The corner's grocers, stage by stage

The table below counts full-size grocers at the intersection. Each stage reflects the dates above.

Stage Cornerstone grocery space 15650 Los Gatos Blvd 15710 Los Gatos Blvd Full-size grocers at the corner
Before April 15, 2026 Whole Foods Former dealership site Nob Hill Two
Today Empty, Gus's coming Whole Foods Nob Hill Two
Spring 2027, if Gus's opens before June Gus's Whole Foods Nob Hill Three
After June 2027 Gus's Whole Foods Not announced Two

By the end, the Cornerstone grocery space belongs to a first-time South Bay operator, the old dealership site holds Whole Foods, and Nob Hill's space is waiting for a tenant.

A possible few weeks with three grocers

Gus's spring target and Nob Hill's June closing are close together. If Gus's opens in the spring as planned, the corner will briefly have three full-size grocers within about a block. For that stretch, a single trip down Los Gatos Boulevard could include Whole Foods' cheese counter, Gus's new aisles and a final visit to Nob Hill. If Gus's opens later, the window closes and the handoff happens with no overlap.

The rest of the town's grocery map stays the same. None of the changes touch the large Safeway on the east side of Highway 17 near downtown. Lunardi's, the specialty grocer, is about five blocks north of the new Whole Foods.

Before any of that happens, Club Studio's grand opening on November 14 is the next date to watch on this stretch of the boulevard. December then brings the town's usual events to downtown. Los Gatos in Lights runs Friday, December 4, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Town Plaza Park. The 70th annual Children's Holiday Parade follows on Saturday, December 5, at 11 a.m.
